Gregorio F. Zaide
|
 |
DR. GREGORIO F. ZAIDE
(1907-1986) was the youngest instructor at the University of the
Philippines and the first professor emeritus of the Far Eastern
University, Manila. In a life spanning over five decades of research,
writing and teaching history and government in Philippine schools and
universities, Dr. Zaide became one of the country’s best known
historians, writers and educators. The author of some 80 books on
Philippine history and government, Asian history, world history, as well
as biographies on Rizal and other great heroes, Dr. Zaide became the
most prolific and best-selling of Filipino historians. His textbooks on
history and government are still used in many schools, colleges and
universities in the Philippines and abroad.
Dr. Zaide was considered the “dean of Filipino historiographers.” He was
also the most prolific, most-travelled and best-selling Filipino
historian, who for fifty years, researched, taught, and wrote on
Philippine history and government. A firm believer that the
understanding of a nation’s history must be based on a rich
documentation and balanced interpretation, he spent his latter years in
compiling the 12-volume Documentary Sources of Philippine History. As
such, Dr. Zaide set out to do what no Filipino historian has done—to
compile a documentary history of the Philippines spanning all the
historical eras.
Dr. Zaide was also that rare academic, one engaged in civic work and
internationally-known. He was the first Filipino exchange scholar of the
University of Hawaii, the first Asian recipient of a United Nations
study grant, a cultural envoy of the City of Manila and the Philippine
government, founder of the Rotary Club of Pagsanjan, Laguna and a
municipal mayor of Pagsanjan (1971-75). He was the recipient of various
awards, including the Republic Cultural Heritage Award (1968), the
Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Award, and the Achievement Award
of the National Research Council of the Philippines.
He was thrice president of the Philippine Historical Association, the
only Filipino member of the Mexican Instituto Pan-Americano de la
Historia y Geografia and the Argentine Instituto Historico de la
Independencia Americana, and a member of the National Academy of Science
and Technology.
Some of Dr. Zaide’s best-known works include the Pageant Of Philippine
History (2 vols.), History of the Republic of the Philippines,
Philippine History and Government, Rizal’s Life, Works and Writings,
Rizal and Other Great Filipinos, History of Asian Nations, and World
History. |
